Electric Cars in Kenya: A dream too big or is the future here?

Published

on

The global transport sector is undergoing a transformation. With world leaders and stakeholders advocating for sustainability across all sectors, the transport industry, both regional and international, is embracing this shift.

While the uptake of clean transportation, such as electric and hybrid vehicles, is still in its early stages worldwide, particularly in Africa and notably in Kenya, the realization that change is inevitable is gradually becoming apparent to millions. With the Kenya Bus Service unveiling its first electric bus, the question is, is the future really here?

The Case for Electric Vehicles

The appeal of electric vehicles (EVs) is clear, offering numerous advantages for Kenya’s environmental and economic landscape. EVs emit no tailpipe pollutants, greatly contributing to the reduction of air pollution in urban areas. Air quality is a critical issue in Kenya, especially in Nairobi which reported PM2.5 air pollution has caused an estimated death of 500 lives since January 1, 2021. It has cost the city’s economy around US$78 million so far this year. Electric vehicles could significantly cut down on dangerous emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, potentially improving public health and decreasing medical costs from air pollution-related diseases.

Electric vehicles also present an opportunity for Kenya to reduce its reliance on imported oil. The transport sector is a significant oil consumer, and volatile global oil prices can burden the national economy, you’ve seen how unstable fuel prices have been in the last couple of months. Transitioning to EVs allows Kenya to leverage its plentiful renewable resources, like solar and wind, for vehicle power generation, enhancing energy security and autonomy.

In terms of cost, electric vehicles may prove more economical over time. Although the initial investment for an EV might surpass that of a conventional petrol or diesel car, the operational expenses for EVs are considerably lower. They require less upkeep than internal combustion engines, and electricity typically costs less than petrol. Moreover, the Kenyan government’s interest in fostering electric mobility, through measures such as the Electric Vehicle Taskforce and potential tax benefits, indicates a strong commitment to facilitating the uptake of electric transportation.

The Roadblocks Ahead

Despite a positive outlook, several obstacles hinder the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Kenya. The primary challenge is the high initial cost. Although the long-term benefits of reduced fuel and maintenance costs are appealing, the upfront investment is a significant hurdle for many.

Another critical issue is infrastructure. A comprehensive charging network is vital for EV owners, yet Kenya is in the nascent stages of building such infrastructure. Additionally, range anxiety, the worry of depleting battery power, is a concern, particularly for those travelling beyond urban centres.

Moreover, the Kenyan electricity grid is already under pressure. The integration of a substantial number of electric vehicles may present further challenges to the grid’s capacity. The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) continues to face challenges in meeting the power supply demands of Kenyans, with concerns that it may lack the capacity to support millions of electric cars. However, change is on the horizon, albeit gradually.

Balancing Dream and Reality

Bridging the gap between ambition and reality requires a comprehensive strategy. Government incentives like tax breaks and subsidies could make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible. Critical to fostering consumer trust is the investment in charging infrastructure. Moreover, local EV assembly could lower expenses and generate employment opportunities.

Public awareness initiatives are also key in informing citizens about electric mobility’s advantages. Furthering research and development in battery technology is essential to address range concerns and decrease costs.

The journey towards broad EV adoption in Kenya is challenging, yet the potential benefits are significant. It presents a chance to purify our urban environments, diminish our carbon footprint, and forge a more sustainable future. The real question is not if electric cars are feasible, but rather how swiftly we can actualize this vision.

Apple Event Recap: New Product Lineup

Published

on

Apple has unveiled a host of new hardware alongside its latest software. Leading the lineup is the iPhone 16 Pro, equipped with the robust A18 Pro chip, designed to handle sophisticated AI tasks on a stunning new display, or at least they said.

Joining the iPhone 16 Pro is the Apple Watch Series 10, featuring advanced health and fitness capabilities, such as Sleep Apnea detection without the need for a cumbersome sleep study. It also sports a sleeker design with a larger screen.

The AirPods 4 have also debuted, boasting a more ergonomic design and an improved charging case that charges faster and is easier to locate if lost. Additionally, Apple has updated the AirPods Pro 2 and Max with fresh software features and new colour options. Let us know which are your favourites in the comments.

Apple Watch

During the presentation on how the Apple Watch enhances lives, Tim Cook unveiled the new Apple Watch Series 10, boasting an ‘all-new design’ that resembles the previous model but is slightly slimmer. The most notable upgrade is the significantly larger display, offering 30% more screen area than the Series 6, paired with a display that’s 30% brighter, making it easier to view content quickly.

The enhanced display is showcased with the new Flux watch face. The Series 10 introduces fresh color options: Jet Black, Rose Gold, and Silver, all featuring increased scratch resistance. The smartwatch’s profile has been slimmed down to 9.7mm, affirming its status as a remarkably thin device. Additionally, Apple has upgraded the charging coil on the watch’s rear, promising reduced charging times.

For those seeking a more luxurious option, Apple is launching the Apple Watch Series 10 with a new Titanium finish. This model is 20% lighter than its Aluminum counterparts and boasts a more sophisticated appearance. However, acquiring this version will require a significant financial investment.

The Apple Watch Series 10 operates on the new S10 SoC, featuring a 4-core neural engine designed to efficiently manage AI tasks. This includes automatic fall detection and emergency services contact, requiring no user intervention. Additionally, the AI chip enables a built-in translation app on the watch, offering a more seamless alternative to using a phone for conversational assistance.

The Apple Watch Series 10 also boasts new workout enhancements. Notably, it features a new depth app that measures diving depth, making it an excellent tool for divers. Additionally, it includes a Tides app to forecast tidal movements, which is useful for beachgoers and surfers.

The Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399.

AirPods

Several years after the release of AirPods 3, Apple has unveiled the AirPods 4 with a sleeker design aimed at enhancing comfort. The latest iteration is equipped with an H2 SoC and a revamped audio architecture, enabling features such as Personalized Spatial Audio for superior sound quality across various content.

The redesigned charging case is now more compact and features a USB-C connection, marking the end of the Lightning cable era. Additionally, noise cancellation, previously a feature of the AirPods Pro, is now standard in the base model. Borrowing from the Samsung Galaxy Buds, the AirPods 4 offer adaptive noise cancellation that adjusts based on your activities and whether you are speaking.

A new addition is a speaker in the charging case, integrated with the Find My network, to assist in locating misplaced earbuds more easily.

The AirPods Pro are also receiving an update. The AirPods Pro 2 will feature a range of capabilities aimed at identifying and preventing hearing loss. The new Hearing Protection feature, enabled by default, will utilize machine learning to detect loud noises and adjust the noise cancellation to safeguard your hearing. Additionally, the AirPods Pro 2 will include a mode that enables them to function as clinical-quality hearing aids.

Apple has updated the AirPods Max, introducing new colors and a USB-C charging feature, with prices starting at $549. The AirPods 4 are priced at $129 for the standard model and $179 for the model with noise cancellation.

iPhone 16 Series

The main event has arrived: a first look at the new iPhone 16. Apple introduces a new color-infused glass available in Ultramarine, Teal, and Pink, alongside the classic White and Black options.

The iPhone 16 inherits the Action Button from the iPhone 15 Pro, a programmable feature for executing various functions swiftly. Additionally, Apple has implemented a dedicated camera button that not only launches the camera app but also functions as a physical shutter, akin to a traditional camera.

The camera button operates similarly to a Mac touchpad; it’s more of a haptic sensor than a button. It can serve as a standard button for quick photo captures, but it also detects lighter touches and movements, allowing for on-the-fly photo setting adjustments without screen interaction. If Apple could integrate this technology to revive TouchID, it would be remarkable.

An enhanced camera system accompanies the new camera button. The iPhone 16 boasts a 48MP main sensor and an Ultrawide lens capable of capturing up to 2.6 times more light, enabling macro photography as well.

iPhone 16 Pro advances AI capabilities even further. The base model boasts a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max features a 6.9-inch screen, slightly larger than the iPhone 15 Pro’s. It maintains a Titanium finish and comes in four colors: Black, White, Natural Titanium, and ‘Desert,’ a subdued Rose Gold variant.

Powered by the A18 Pro chip, which shares the Neural Engine with the standard A18 but includes additional cache for professional tasks, Apple promises significant performance improvements over the iPhone 15 Pro. However, the difference in pure performance compared to the standard iPhone 16 may not be substantial.

The iPhone 16 Pro enhances photography with a 5x Telephoto lens, alongside the 48MP main camera and ultrawide lens, significantly boosting zoomed-in shot quality. It also promises superior distant object photography.

Audio quality receives an upgrade with four ‘studio-quality’ microphones, offering improved recording capabilities, particularly for video. The neural engine also supports professional voice filters to eliminate background noise or highlight a specific speaker’s voice.

The iPhone 16 is priced at $799 for the 128GB model, and the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899, also with 128GB. The iPhone 16 Pro is available at $999 for 128GB, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max begins at $1,119 for 256GB of storage.

7 Powerful Ways to Make YouTube Work for You

Published

on

YouTube Turned My Life Around. Seriously!

10 years ago, I was just a kid who wanted unlimited coins for my phone games. Guess where I found out how to get them?

YouTube.

Yep, it showed me how to root my device and unlock everything I ever wanted. I felt like a hacker!

Fast forward to our last year of high school, my friends and I decided we wanted to study the Bible more deeply and live a genuine Christian life.

But where could we possibly go for that?

Then came the phase where I wanted to sound more articulate, fancied myself a digital minimalist, got curious about lifestyle medicine, wanted to dress better (so I looked more confident and approachable).

Write more effectively, lift heavy weights, almost perfect my swimming strokes, and even get some dating advice.

Where did I turn to?

Yet, YouTube May Feel Like A Bottomless Pit Of Content

With its overwhelming amount of information, you might end up drowning in cat videos and celebrity gossip when all you wanted was to learn how to cook pasta that doesn’t stick together like glue.

But, if used intentionally, it’s like having a personal tutor for everything you’ve ever wanted to learn, and the best part?

FOR FREE!!

And so, I’m here to convince you

How You Can Make YouTube Your Personal Self-Improvement Tool That Works For You!

Turning you into the fascinating, well-rounded genius you’ve always dreamed of being.

Can’t eat your own cooked food? Let me show you how YouTube can turn you into the family’s star chef—or hey, maybe even help you finally find a man (because who doesn’t love a good cook?)

Need help to budget? Still haven’t figured out how to get your grades up?

Wanna take better pictures, or develop an obsession with reading?

Learn Chinese so that you can speak with half the world?

Or bake the perfect cake for your mom’s 60th birthday to remind her she’s still the best thing that ever happened to you—even though you’ve never known how to use an oven?

Here’s how.

1. Clean Up Your Subscription List and Algorithm So That YouTube Works For You, Not Against You

Intentionally subscribe to channels that align with your goals and unsubscribe from those that don’t.

Avoid mindless scrolling, as it can lead to unproductive content being suggested.

Instead, support the videos you enjoy by liking, sharing & commenting, to get similar recommendations.

Do this consistently for 3 months, and watch as YouTube algorithm transforms into a personal self-development assistant tailored to your needs.

2. Create Playlists To Organize Content

Whether it’s long-form lectures, tutorials, or videos recommended by friends, categorize them into playlists for easy access.

This simple habit saves you time and prevents the frustration of searching for that one video you need among a sea of irrelevant content.

3. Set Consistent Time Limits To Plan Your YouTube learning

Whether it’s 30 minutes a day or 1 hour every weekend.

Consistent, shorter sessions are more effective than binge-watching for hours on end, which can turn your active learning into passive viewing.

Remember, the goal is to absorb and apply what you’ve learned, not to turn YouTube into another source of entertainment.

4. Have Specific Daily/Weekly/Monthly Goals

Don’t just watch anything—dedicate time to a particular theme or subject, and immerse yourself fully.

When a video points you to further resources, follow up with research.

If you encounter something challenging, take the time to understand it thoroughly before moving on.

This approach ensures that you’re consolidating your knowledge and making the most of your watch time.

5. Engage with Content Actively To Learn Deeply

Take notes, pause to reflect, and try out what you’ve learned in real life.

Active participation solidifies your learning.

Use flashcards, share insights with friends, write about your experiences, and apply your new skills in everyday life.

6. Explore New Interests To Meet New Challenges and Opportunities To Grow

Don’t be afraid to dive into topics you’ve been curious about but haven’t yet explored.

That’s how you might discover your interest in exercise and stay consistent for a year plus.

You never know where a new interest might lead—it could even become your next passion or career path.

7. Treat Your YouTube Learning Time Like Class Time

Silence notifications and focus entirely on the content.

The Pomodoro technique is a great way to structure your sessions—study for 20-30 minutes, then take 5-minute break intervals.

Use breaks to recharge, not to distract yourself.

Whether it’s tidying up your room, doing a quick workout, or reading a few pages of a book, make sure your break activities help you return to your study session refreshed and ready to learn, not tired and distracted that you dread your next study session.

The Next Time You Open YouTube, Ask Yourself, “Am I Here To Grow?”

Practice intentionality, seek out content that aligns with your goals, and use this powerful tool to learn, grow, and thrive.

In doing so, you’ll find that YouTube isn’t just a place for entertainment—it’s a platform that can help you become the best version of yourself.

The early days of Google Drive made it quite attractive to users once the service offered unlimited free storage for high-quality photos. Back in 2021, Google capped photo and document storage, forcing many people to look elsewhere, the next optimal option, is Dropbox. Similarly, Dropbox monetized a portion of its service and went from one of the most popular free services out there, offering limited free storage with options to upgrade to paid plans. But what do we do now? Here’s a few options to consider;

Google Drive

Google Drive still remains one of the favourite cloud services as it works wonderfully with other applications in Google Workspace like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This offers free storage of about 15GB shared across all Google services, while paid accounts start at $1.67/month for 100GB.

It’s a decent enough choice if one is already in the Google ecosystem, more so for students and professionals who use these apps a lot.

iDrive

IDrive is popular for its hybrid approach to cloud storage that also backs up to the cloud. Besides many other features, it includes real-time syncing, a backup scheduling option, and end-to-end-encryption. It offers 5GB for free. Paid plans start at $59.62 yearly for 5TB.

The service suits users looking for complete-scale backup possibilities along with regular cloud storage services.

pCloud

pCloud provides some of the best value for long-term use, available with lifetime plans, besides subscription options. Up to 10GB are available for free, while its premium plans start at $3.99 per month for 500GB.

Indeed, pCloud is a strong competitor, with zero-knowledge encryption, block-level syncing for faster uploads, and even robust media playing features without download.

Sync.com

Sync.com is a privacy-driven service, best known for its zero-knowledge encryption with excellent security features, ideal for users handling sensitive data.

It’s competitively priced at $6 per month, offers unlimited storage, and is the best choice for power users who value privacy and security.

MEGA

MEGA enables users who want a more generous free storage amount up to 20 GB with strong encryption and a good privacy policy. Paid plans offer as much as 16 TB of storage, so it suits users who require ample space and value data security highly.

OneDrive

OneDrive is deeply integrated with Microsoft Office applications. It’s a very convenient choice for users in the Microsoft ecosystem and provides 5 GB of free storage, besides offering paid plans starting at $1.67 per month for 100 GB.

It’s particularly useful for professionals who need tight integration with Office tools.

Dropbox

Dropbox is still one of the fiercest competitors, thanks to its ease of use and powerful collaboration toolset-especially for business users. It offers 2GB free, with paid plans starting at $9.99 per month for 2TB.

Dropbox is excellent to use regarding team collaboration, but probably not so great when it comes to huge free storage requests.

Egnyte

More businesslike, Egnyte also throws in advanced collaboration settings for teams, while integrations with other apps include Slack and Google Workspace.

It starts at $10 per user per month, making it a great choice for organizations needing advanced security and compliance features.

Cloud storage has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, and the various services have introduced several features and diverse pricing to suit a wide number of needs. While Google Drive and Dropbox are still widely used, other services like IDrive, pCloud, and Sync.com provide interesting options for serving data renters who want either the strongest privacy protection or large back-up solutions. Your individual needs of storage quantity, security requirement, and integration with other applications should be weighed while choosing the best cloud storage service for yourself.
