Miley Cyrus Is Facing A Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Over Her Song ‘Flowers’

Published

on

Miley Cyrus is facing a lawsuit from Tempo Music Investments over her 2023 hit “Flowers.”

The lawsuit alleges that the melody, harmony, and chorus of “Flowers” are strikingly similar to Bruno Mars’ 2012 song “When I Was Your Man,” in which Tempo Music Investments claims to have a stake.

The firm’s argument hinges on the similarities between the lyrics and overall composition of the two songs, despite the fact that the lyrics in “Flowers” are seen as a paraphrase rather than a direct copy.

“Flowers” features Cyrus singing: “I can buy myself flowers. Write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours. Say things you don’t understand. I can take myself dancing. And I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can.” In contrast, Mars’ song includes: “That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand … Now my baby’s dancin’, but she’s dancin’ with another man.”

“Flowers,” which appears on Cyrus’ album Endless Summer Vacation, won several awards, including a Grammy for Record of the Year, and was speculated to be about her ex-husband, actor Liam Hemsworth.
