The Waiting Room: A satirical play by Igiza Arts.

Published

on

Whenever someone mentions theatre plays, my mind rushes back to my embarrassing situation. In form 3, void of hobbies and dying to be anywhere else but school, I auditioned for a place in the music festival plays. Not only did I not make the first cut,  but also failed to project my voice. That day my voice box failed and in turn, I carry such great respect for theater actors and plays. Plays were my forte back in high school. All this to say, I’m back, in love with theatre and plays and the message.

A lot has happened to us (Kenyans) in 2024, and since art is the mirror in which society checks itself, Igiza Arts presents a satirical drama “The Waiting Room”.

The Waiting Room is a play written by  Playwright Martin Abuya and produced by Arnold Mandu. As we tweet #paydoctors and #occupyMOH, we know sometimes, our healthcare system is flawed.

Martin Abuya uses humour to address issues in our healthcare system and family fabric. “Through ‘The Waiting Room,’ I hope to highlight the challenges faced by both healthcare workers and patients in Kenya. It’s a reflection of our reality, delivered with a mix of satire and heart,” said Martin.

The talented cast includes Kennedy Kithia, Lisa, Jeff Obonyo, Vanessa Gichio, Edna Kariuki, Muthoni Njoki, Harold Kerry, Lydia Mamati, Prince Kamselele, Linda Kamuri, Sammy Waweru. Edna Kariuki and Lydia Mamati as the stage managers.

Igiza Arts Production a renowned production house, has continuously pushed the boundaries of Kenyan theatre, fostering a deeper appreciation for the performing arts, and providing a platform for artists. They aim to produce and showcase thought-provoking, impactful theatrical works. Earlier this year, they produced Severed Justice, a play on police brutality as experienced in the #RejectFinanceBill protest. The show was a success.

They have also produced shows such as The Ideal Husband, Law & Behold, Sins& Secrets, and Don’t Dress for Dinner.

The show premiers on September 7th and 8th 2024, at 3 pm and 6 pm on both days. Where? Kenya National Theater. What should you bring? Handkerchiefs, you might laugh… or cry! Tickets are available

Inside Out 2 becomes the first animated film to hit $1 billion

Published

on

In a remarkable achievement, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has shattered box office records by becoming the first-ever animated film to gross over $1 billion at the international box office. This achievement not only highlights the film’s widespread appeal but also secures its position in cinematic history as one of the few films to cross this significant financial milestone.
Inside Out 2’s success stands out significantly among animated films. Historically, animated features have often struggled to compete with blockbuster live-action films in terms of box office revenue. However, Inside Out 2 has defied expectations, joining an elite group of only 12 films that have surpassed the billion-dollar mark. This exclusive club includes cinematic giants such as Avatar(2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water as well as timeless classics like Titanic. Additionally, it shares this honour with superhero epics like Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War and the iconic Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
The film’s groundbreaking financial success can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost, Inside Out 2 builds on the beloved foundation of its predecessor, which was released in 2015. The original film was not only a critical darling but also resonated deeply with audiences, exploring the complex emotions of a young girl navigating life’s challenges. This emotional depth, combined with Pixar’s signature animation quality, has created a strong fan base eager for the sequel.

Moreover, the marketing strategy surrounding Inside Out 2 has played a crucial role in its box office success. By tapping into nostalgia and resonating with both children and adults, Pixar has successfully attracted a diverse audience. The film’s themes of growth, self-discovery, and emotional intelligence resonate universally, making it relatable and relevant to viewers of all ages.
The achievement of Inside Out 2 also reflects a growing trend in the animation industry where animated films are increasingly recognized as serious competitors in the box office arena. As technology continues to advance, allowing for stunning visual storytelling, and as more studios invest in high-quality animated productions, the line between animated and live-action films continues to blur.
In conclusion, Inside Out 2 stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the evolving landscape of animated cinema. Its record-breaking box office performance not only marks a historic achievement for Pixar but also paves the way for future animated films to reach new heights. As audiences continue to embrace the magic of animation, it is clear that the genre is more than just child’s play. It is a force to be reckoned with in the film industry.
