The Kenya Film Commission has selected Nawi as the country’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The 2024 film explores themes of love, identity, and cultural heritage through the story of a young woman caught between traditional expectations and modern-day pressures. As she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, Nawi reflects broader societal tensions between honoring the past and embracing the future—issues that resonate far beyond Kenya’s borders.
Out of four entries submitted this year—Nawi, Searching for Amani, OTIS Janam, and Wamaitha—Nawi was chosen to represent Kenya.
As Nawi heads to the Academy Awards, it carries Kenya’s hope for international recognition and shines a spotlight on the country’s evolving creative narrative.
