MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) is celebrating Afrobeats with its own dedicated category for the second year in a row.
This year’s nominees showcase a blend of powerful talent and compelling music. Ayra Starr leads with her Giveon-collaboration “Last Heartbreak Song,” followed by Burna Boy’s energetic “City Boys.” Notably, Tyla’s Grammy-winning sensation, “Water,” also makes the list. Nigerian producer and singer Pheelz earns a nomination for his contribution to Usher’s smooth track, “Ruin,” among others.
Tyla is also vying for the Best New Artist award, a title she recently secured at the BET Awards. She faces competition from country-fusion artist Shaboozey, who has seen a rapid rise on the charts in recent months.
Swift leads the nominations with 10 nods and is up against stiff competition, including Billie Eilish’s “Lunch” and SZA’s “Snooze,” in the Video of the Year category. Post Malone follows closely with nine nominations, while Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande each secure six nominations.
Last year, the inaugural winner for Best Afrobeats was awarded to Rema for his infectious remix of “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez.
The winners will be announced during the VMAs ceremony at the UBS Arena in New York on September 10.
