In a surprising revelation, it appears that Kenya’s Generation Z, known for their adeptness with technology and aged between 11 and 26, are immersing themselves in gospel music beyond the confines of Sunday worship, as evidenced by Spotify streaming data.

The most streamed gospel artists among Gen Z in Kenya include Christina Shusho, Maverick City Music, Elevation Worship, Hillsong Worship, and Chandler Moore.

As the melodies of gospel tunes continue to resonate across Kenya, the surge in gospel music consumption among Gen Z reflects not just a preference for tradition but a redefinition of it. Between 2022 and 2024, there has been a remarkable 365% increase in Christian music streaming by Kenyan Gen Z, indicating their fervent appetite for spiritual enrichment.

While Sundays have long been synonymous with gospel music, Spotify data reveals a shift, with Tuesdays and Fridays emerging as unexpected favorites, closely followed by Mondays and Thursdays.

The affinity for gospel music among Kenyan Gen Z extends beyond passive listening to active curation of their musical journeys. With over 70,000 gospel playlists created on Spotify by Gen Z, it’s evident that they are keen on finding music that resonates with their beliefs and experiences.

Moreover, it’s not merely about the music but also about the message. The digital landscape has empowered Gen Z to express their faith through various mediums, including podcasts. Between 2022 and 2024, streaming of Christian podcasts by Kenyan Gen Z witnessed a notable 69% growth. Among the top-listened podcasts on Spotify are “Gospel Music Explosion” and “The Daily Bible,” followed closely by “Let God Podcast,” “Apostle Joshua Selman,” and “Beyond Grace Prayer Podcast.”
