Popular Slang Term ‘Rizz’ Named Word Of The Year

Oxford University Press (OUP) has crowned “rizz” as the Word of the Year for 2023, defining it as a colloquial term for “style, charm, or attractiveness.”

Lexicographers at OUP chose “rizz” as a fascinating example of language evolution within communities. Believed to be derived from ‘charisma,’ the term gained mainstream recognition after Spider-Man actor Tom Holland humorously stated he had “no rizz whatsoever.”

The selection of “rizz” reflects the impact of Generation Z on language, showcasing how younger generations shape and own the language they use, both online and offline. The term prevailed over contenders like “beige flag,” indicating a dull partner, and other finalists such as “Swiftie,” “prompt,” and “situationship.”

This linguistic honor follows OUP’s tradition of highlighting words that capture the zeitgeist, with previous selections including “vax” (2021) and “selfie” (2013).

“Rizz” stands as a testament to the dynamic nature of language, spotlighting the interplay between culture, communication, and the evolving lexicon.
