YouTube recently launched “The Voices of Africa,” a groundbreaking social campaign in collaboration with a select group of African creators. The initiative aims to celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the continent, encouraging creators from Sub-Saharan Africa to share videos on their YouTube channels that explore their unique cultural stories.

Twala Ngambi, Strategic Partner Manager at YouTube, expressed the platform’s commitment to highlighting the diversity of cultures, creators, and content. Ngambi emphasized that the “Voices of Africa” campaign provides an opportunity to showcase Africa’s cultural richness through the varied experiences and perspectives of creators across the continent.

The participating creators were challenged to be creative and authentic, sharing their heritage stories in ways that resonate with their audiences. The campaign encourages creators to take viewers into their family homes, share experiences from their primary schools, or reveal personal family recipes. Ngambi believes that each story has the potential to educate, entertain, and inspire audiences.

The campaign features a roster of diverse creators, including Seithati Letsipa from South Africa, who explored the cultural practice of Pabadimo, a thanksgiving ceremony in her community. Susan Wahome from Kenya delved into the secrets behind great African cuisine, while Nigerian creator ‘Stylebereme’ shared her love for African Wax prints.

Wongel Zelalem provided an in-depth look at her Ethiopian heritage, and Nigerian storyteller Steven Ndukwu immersed himself in the martial art of Dambe, a traditional practice of the Hausa people from West Africa. Kate Kendy from Kenya took viewers on a journey through her personal history, heritage, and the countryside.

South African creator Banele Ndaba shared a personal journey through his upbringing, exploring his hometown, school life, and engaging in conversations with his family. Reggie Mohlabi released a video offering audiences an in-depth look at his background.

The overarching goal of “The Voices of Africa” campaign is to share the unique stories and voices of the continent with the rest of the world, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for Africa’s cultural richness. YouTube believes that by amplifying these diverse narratives, the campaign will contribute to building connections and bridging cultural gaps globally.
