Hamilton claims his 100th win in Formula One

Published

It was set to be a thrilling race day yesterday at Sochi, during the Russian F1 Grand Prix. McLaren and British driver Lando Norris began on pole ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ George Russel. Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton could only manage to qualify at P4, with Max Verstappen and Valterri Bottas beginning at the back of the grid.

The race began with eye-catching action as Lando lost his place to Carlos, while Hamilton lost 3 positions.

By lap 23, Lando had reclaimed his position with Hamilton at P2. Meanwhile, Verstappen and Bottas continued to gain positions; at 5th and 10th respectively, as the pit window opened.

At lap 47/53, rain signs began to show on track, as Hamilton battled Lando for P1. Two laps later, Hamilton pitted for intermediate tyres as the rain increased, while Lando decided to stay out on the slick tyres. This decision later cost him a grand prix win as he span off the track with just two laps to go, due to lack of grip on the wet track.

Lewis Hamilton picked up P1 and drove to the chequered flag to claim his 100th F1 career win, as the first ever driver to reach such a milestone. Max Verstappen finished P2 as Carlos Sainz rounded off the podium positions at P3.

“It is a magical moment. I could only have dreamed of still being here, to have this opportunity to win these races, and to drive with such phenomenal talents this late on in my career. I am so proud of everything we have done with Mercedes, on and off the track, and this is a special moment for everyone that has been part of it,” the ‘centurion’ said.

Mercedes F1 Team boss, also congratulated Hamilton saying,” I think we are witnesses of a career that is just amazing. The 100th race victory is just mind-blowing.”

Yesterday’s event means that Hamilton goes 2 points clear of Verstappen, with Bottas and Lando at positions 3 and 4 respectively, at the drivers’ championship standings.
