McLaren reign in Monza, Hamilton and Verstappen fail to finish

Published

on

It was an eventful race yesterday in Italy, during the Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Di Monza circuit. Max Verstappen began on pole ahead of McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. Mercedes’ Valterri Bottas had won the sprint race on Saturday but he was then penalised for an engine change. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, would begin 4th.

It was a clean start at the beginning of the race, with Daniel Ricciardo overtaking Max Verstappen at turn 1 and only Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi hitting the barriers just after turn 5, after being clipped by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The race continued with duels from Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, as Hamilton sort to gain 3rd position and as Bottas continued to gain positions from the back of the grid.

On lap 26, just after Lewis Hamilton was coming from the pits, he and Max Verstappen collided at turn 2 as both drivers tried to get ahead of each other. Max Verstappen ran out of track and hit the kerbs plus Hamilton’s rear tyre, forcing his car to slightly lift and land over Hamilton’s car.

As the race resumed after the safety car, Redbull’s Sergio Perez was handed a 5-second time penalty for exceeding track limits and retaining advantage over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who was later overtaken by a surging Bottas. The Fin also tried to make the move over Sergio Perez but the latter defended his position bravely.

In the end, Daniel Ricciardo took the chequered flag in front of his teammate, as Sergio Perez crossed the line third. He(Perez) was however placed 5th due to his penalty, giving Bottas his podium finish while Leclerc took 4th.

The race winner had the following to say,” I’ll be honest, I don’t think it’s actually sunk in yet. It’s actually probably the first time I’ve been overwhelmed by winning. I think as well because it’s been over three years. Not that this affects me, but I just know that no one would have expected this to happen this year, especially after the first half of the year. If you truly love something and believe in it, then never doubt yourself. Some of the speed bumps along the way make moments like this so much sweeter.”

The results at Monza leave Verstappen in the lead with 5 points ahead of Hamilton as Bottas closes at 3rd while Lando Norris and Ricciardo of McLaren are 4th and 8th respectively in drivers’ championships standings. The next race will be at Sochi in Russia.
