UEFA scraps off the away goal rule

the use of the away goal rule by Uefa is abolished, now European competition football players can focus on attacking football.

Wondering what an away goal is? Then here is a simple explanation; they are the number of goals a visiting team scores at the opponents stadium. On Thursday, UEFA scrapped of the use of away goals in all its competitions, both men and women, which are the UEFA League, Conference League and the UEFA Champions League, after 56 years of being in use to determine who proceeds after both teams tie on aggregate scores.

The changes will take effect as from the start of next season. After the teams plays their two legs and the aggregate tally of their goals is a draw, they will proceed to a 30 minutes extra time. If there is still a stalemate after the extra time, the teams proceed to penalties.

In a statement by Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA president said, “The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.

The official UEFA statement highlights the fact there has been a reduction in home wins and goals, in UEFA club competitions as a majority of clubs opting to defend more to protect number of goals against them. Many have been advocating for its removal from UEFA club competitions, with Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone and former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger being against the abolition of the rule.

The news has sparked different emotions among fans, as some are welcoming the move while others are of the opinion that football has died and that a lot of time will be consumed extra time and penalties .
