Call it misfortune or bad luck, it has happened. Spain made history by becoming the first country to miss five consecutive penalties. Though they went on to win yesterday’s match against Slovakia with a 5-0 thumping, they still could not find the back of the net from the spot kick. Before the streak began Spain had not missed a penalty since EUROS 2016 match against Croatia.

These penalty misses all started when Sergio Ramos, their finest penalty taker, failed to convert from the spot on two occasions in which Spain went ahead to draw with Switzerland. Abel Ruiz then made it three penalty misses in the recent fixture against Lithuania with a slight miss.

Gerard Moreno second half penalty made it four out of four misses in the EUROS 2021 match against Poland and unfortunately Spain went ahead to draw 1-1 at Estadio Olympico de la Cartujat. Yesterday, Alvaro Morata made the fifth penalty miss as Martin Dubravka, Slovakian goalkeeper, denied him through a fine save, although the goalkeeper later scored an own goal.

Messi set to sign a new deal with 50 percent pay cut

Messi is Barcelona’s record scorer with 672 goals and has won 10 La Liga titles and 4 Champions Leagues

Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, has reached a verbal agreement on a new deal that will keep him at Camp Nou for another 5 years, it will take him to a total of 26 years at the club when it expires. He was a free agent as of July 1st 2021 after he failed to agree a new deal with Barcelona.

The announcement could yet be days away because La Liga is insisting that the club should offload some wages. This means that Barcelona have to sell some players before Messi can sign the contract in order for the club to be in line with La Liga’s financial guidelines.

Earlier in July, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner helped his country Argentina to win the Copa America title after defeating Brazil. The win ended his long wait for a first major international trophy.

Last August Messi told the club to activate a clause in his contract which would have seen him leave for free. However, Javier Tebas(La Liga president) and Josep Bartomeu(The then Barca President) blocked the move and any club interested in buying the Argentine would have to pay his €700m release clause in full.

Bartomeu went on to resign in October and Messi expressed his intentions to listen to the plans of his successor Joan Laporta before deciding his future at the club.

Messi is Barcelona’s record scorer with 672 goals and has won 10 La Liga titles, 4 Champions Leagues, 6 Copa Del Reys, 3 World club titles,7 Spanish super cups and 3 European super cups.
